Meet an Author: Priti Birla Maheshwari

Writer: Phoenix Journey BooksPhoenix Journey Books

Priti Birla Maheshwari is the author of the award-winning picture book Chaiwala! and the Queen Bee chapter book series.

Born in India, Priti moved to Montreal and later Toronto where she teaches French. Her debut book Chaiwala! tells the story of a young girl and her mother who stop for chai at a train station in Jaipur, India. Illustrated by Ashley Barron, the book explores the sights, sounds, and smells of the experience, and celebrates the joy of taking time for family, food, and tradition.

In this special Q&A, Priti shares the inspiration behind Chaiwala! and reveals what she wants to tell the readers with her story.

1. What inspired you to write Chaiwala!?

I wanted to create a story where children could see themselves immersed in the joy of everyday moments, surrounded by love, curiosity, and connection. Growing up, I didn’t always see stories that reflected experiences like mine, so it was important for me to bring that warmth and familiarity to young readers.

I hope this book not only transports them to India but also reminds them that their own everyday experiences are worth celebrating. Whether it’s the aroma of chai, spending time with your best friend, or the simple joy of sharing a moment with a loved one, I want children to feel seen and know that their stories matter.

2. What did you enjoy the most about the writing process?

I enjoyed reconnecting with my childhood memories and bringing them to life on the page. Writing this story allowed me to relive those moments and share that sense of wonder with young readers. But what truly made the process special was knowing that I was creating a book where children—especially those who don’t often see themselves in stories—could feel represented, celebrated, and connected to the magic of everyday experiences.

3. What do you want to tell readers with Chaiwala!?

I want readers to experience the beauty of small yet meaningful moments, for instance, how a simple cup of chai can bring people together and create lasting memories.

Through Chaiwala!, I hope to immerse readers in the sights, sounds, and flavours of India while celebrating connection, curiosity, and the joy of pausing to savour life’s everyday wonders.

4. How do the illustrations complement the text?

Ashley Barron's stunning collage illustrations bring Chaiwala! to life with vibrant colours. Her layered paper medium beautifully captures the energy of the bustling chai stall, from the steam curling off a hot cup of chai to the lively gestures of people gathering and sharing a moment.

Each page bursts with warmth and detail, immersing readers in the sensory experience of the story. The illustrations not only complement the text but also enhance its emotional depth, making the sights, sounds, and feelings of the moment feel even more tangible and engaging.
